Performance guide

Performance is the stage view: the current song, its lyrics and chords, its progress, and large transport buttons.

  • At the top: the setlist picker, the song picker, and the song’s name. The setlist picker shows each setlist’s number of songs. The song picker numbers the songs and, unless you turn it off in Setup, shows their lengths.
  • In the middle: the lyrics and chords.
  • At the bottom: the song’s progress, with the time played and the time left, and the transport: Stop, Prev, the song’s name and its place in the list (for example 1/3), Next, and Play.

In Prest and the next release, the page is one surface with two bars:

  • The top bar holds the setlist and song pickers as two buttons at the start, and at the end the lock (while the device is locked), the view picker, and Metronome. Both pickers have a search field: type a name or a song’s number.
  • The transport bar is at the bottom of every page, Editor and Setup included.
  1. Choose a setlist with the first picker. All Songs lists the whole library, if Setup offers it on this device.
  2. Choose a song with the second picker.

Choosing a song opens its project in the host and moves to the song’s start, stopped. Every device follows. Save your work in the host first: the open project is replaced without saving.

  • While the host plays, choosing a song queues it instead: the transport shows Next: and the song’s name, and Play becomes Play Next. Tap the song’s name in the middle of the transport to clear the queued song.
  • In 0.1.1, choosing a setlist while the host is stopped also opens a song: the one already shown, if the setlist holds it, else its first song.
  • In Prest and the next release, choosing a setlist only shows it. Nothing opens until you choose a song.
Button What it does
Play / Pause Starts or pauses the host.
Play Next Shown while a song is queued: opens the queued song and plays it.
Stop Stops the host. It returns to the start of the song.
Prev Opens the previous song in the list, stopped.
Next Opens the queued song, or else the next song in the list, stopped.

Stop and Play are dimmed while the page is not connected, and Prev or Next at either end of the list. The progress bar shows where you are; it does not move the playhead.

When a song in a project with several songs reaches its end, the host stops.

In Prest and the next release:

  • Metronome turns the host’s metronome on or off.
  • Play on a song that is not loaded loads it and plays it, and leaves any queued song queued.
  • Every device shows the song the host is playing, even one started from the DAW. If the playhead runs on into the next song of the same project, the host follows it there without stopping.
  • A song whose project is not open shows Not loaded and Tap to load. A song without a project shows No project and Nothing to load. A song the host plays that the library does not have shows Playing a song that isn’t in the library.

When the song has timed lyrics and chords, they are laid out bar by bar, with each chord over its beat and the time signature where it changes. The word and chord being played are highlighted, and the view follows the playhead. If you scroll by hand, following pauses for a moment and then resumes.

Change the text size in Setup. Messages you may see in place of the lyrics:

Message Meaning
Loading lyrics and chords… The host is reading them.
Updating lyrics and chords… The project changed and the host is reading them again.
(no MIDI lyrics found) The song has no lyrics or chords. See the REAPER or Ableton Live guide.
Lyrics and chords unavailable: … The host could not read them; the reason follows.
Lyrics and chords may be out of date: … The last update failed; what is shown is older.
  • Focus mode: double-tap the lyrics to fill the screen with them and the progress bar. Double-tap again to return.
  • Swipe: a quick swipe left across the transport moves to the next song, and a swipe right to the previous one, as Next and Prev do.

In Prest and the next release, each device chooses what it shows of a song with the view picker in the top bar:

View Shows
Lyrics & Chords The lyrics with the chords over them. The default.
Lyrics The lyrics alone, for singers.
Chords The chords alone, on the lyrics’ bars.
A score part, such as Bass The notes of a track named Score or starting with it (Score Bass), as notation. A part on two staves offers upper and lower.
An attachment, such as Bass A chart or part from the song’s attachments, page by page. See Editor.
Show Info The song, its key, the time left in the song and in the set, the host’s clock, and what is queued or next.
Mixer The host’s mixer.

The choice is kept for that song on that device. Set the view every song starts with in Setup, under This Device, Default View. A song without the chosen view shows Lyrics & Chords. Chords written in square brackets inside a lyric, such as [Am]Hel[F]lo, are drawn over their syllables; a song with a chord track uses the track’s chords instead.

The Mixer view shows a strip for every track of the host’s project, in its folders or groups, and the master at the right. Each strip has its name, M (mute), S (solo, not on the master), a fader with its meters and its level in dB, a pan control (C in the middle, L25, R100), and the sends it feeds, which you can read but not change here.

In Prest and the next release, a device with a keyboard takes these keys on the Performance page. Press ? to see them on screen.

Key Action
Space Play or pause
← / → Previous song / next song
Enter Play the queued song now
Delete or Backspace Cancel the queued section, else the queued song
S Stop
Esc Cancel the queued section, else leave focus mode
? Show the shortcuts

With Prest, ↑ and ↓ also queue the previous or next section, V vamps, and E stops after the section: see Song form. Keys are ignored while you type in a field or a dialog is open.

In Prest and the next release, Setup, This Device, Lock This Device turns off the transport, the setlist and song pickers, swipes, and keys other than ? and Esc on that device, so a stray touch cannot change the show. The device keeps showing the show and can still scroll; the view picker and the Mixer view stay usable. To unlock, press and hold the lock in the top bar for a second, or use Setup. The lock is a safeguard, not a password.

In Prest only: when Prest plays a song with a form, a strip under the progress bar shows its sections in play order. Tap one to jump to it, hold one to set how often it plays, vamp (V), or stop after the section (E). Show Info then also shows the section playing and the next one. See The song’s form for the whole strip. REAPER and Live have no song forms.

Next: Tune this device in Setup.
